The cause of almost all relationship difficulties is rooted in conflicting or ambiguous expectations around roles and goals. Whether you are dealing with the question of who does what at work, how you communicate with your daughter when you tell you her to clean her room, or who feeds the fish and takes out the garbage, you can be certain that unclear expectations will lead to misunderstanding, disappointment, and withdrawals of trust.
—Stephen Covey on Communication
How many client relationships have gone sour because roles weren’t clear or goals weren’t stated? These two items must be nailed down before the proposal is signed. Who’s going to be responsible for content? Who gives approval? How do we win? When are we finished? Part of exceeding client expectations is making it clear what they will be responsible for and when we can claim the project completed. Have a great week!
