A few weeks ago I wrote a post on how Internet Explorer 6 is robbing users of internet bliss. Developers of popular collaboration program Basecamp agree:
IE 6 is definitely the most painful browser for us to support – it’s seven years old and doesn’t even fully support the CSS 1.0 standard created in 1996. Microsoft’s done an incredibly poor job of getting users to upgrade.
Finally someone is taking a major step toward IE6 retirement. Apple has chosen not to support IE6 for their upcoming personal management service, MobileMe. Basecamp developers noticed it in their article here.
I say it’s about time. We’ve created some great web designs only to scale them back to function properly in IE6. I’m looking forward to putting it in the attic right next to this guy:

I am 100% down with that. Having just come off of a job for a client who was still working in the IE6 world, my design, lovingly created to function in IE7, Safari, Firefox - you name it - looks like a bag of bruised potatoes in IE6. I will be happy when that train wreck of a browser kicks it.

@kimball Remarkably, there are still a huge group of users who have no idea there are different browsers available. I hope the buzz around FF3 can break through enough to get people to try it. I hope more people copy Apple and nix teh IE6. Thanks for stopping by!

As a Web designer I agree that IE6 is a problem, especially with those that use CSS. Writing CSS fixes for IE6 so you can get the Website you designed to look right can get annoying at times. I test my designs in IE7, FF, Opera, and Safari and it’s always IE that has the most problems understanding certain CSS. I do wish that more people would upgrade away from IE6 and catch up with the times.

@William L And hopefully FF3 and Apple’s decision to no longer support IE6 for MobileMe will help start the trend. Thanks!
