Web design is an endurance race. You solve the problem of arranging content on the pages. You solve the problem of making navigation make sense. You solve the problem of making it not look like every other website. You solve the problem of making the homepage great. You solve the problem of selling it to the client. And just when you think your plan is flawless, right before you exhale in victory, you remember that you have to design that damn favicon! 256 demonic pixels of blank canvas that have to cleverly sum up the essence entire site. I’ve talk to a few people who like doing them, and I’ve talked to a ton of people that think I’m nuts and tell me favicons are “no big deal.” I’ve always argued that they AREN’T a big deal which is exactly why it kills me to have to make them.
All that changes today. I read here about the new Google favicon which lit the web ablaze with comments and speculation. So, I now tip my hat to the favicon. I must concede that that little square, pound for pound, does more for the website brand than anything else I design. (I still hate it though)

See I told you favicons are FUN and tiny but important part of carrying out a branding! Thanks Google for helping me win this ongoing argument!
