Dick Mitchell Speaks at the May DSVC Meeting

Last night at the DSVC meeting, I had the privilege to hear DIck Mitchell speak from the heart about his fantastic career and give advice to the next generation of identity designers. It was a real honor because, to be frank, the work from his firm, RBMM, has been the single biggest influence on my career.

When I first got serious about design in college, I started scouring every design annual I could find to figure out “what was good” and to see who did good work. One of the design firms that I remember seeing everywhere was RBMM. I developed a pretty unhealthy crush on them the more I studied their work. I loved that they always won but I really loved the way they did it. RBMM consistently has ideas with 1000 lbs. of power presented in a way that makes them float effortlessly in mid air.

The more I found out about them, the more I discovered they deserve all the love I gave them and more. I’m not as good on Dallas design history as I should be, but I know they were the original design arm of our beloved Richards Group. In the last 30 years, the original RBMM dream team of talent has gone on to form many of the better Dallas design firms. Most impressive to me, however, is that their legacy of uncompromising work has filtered down without diluting making Dallas one of the premier design centers in the country.

Below are just a few of my favorites from RBMM’s ridiculous portfolio of work:
